How do I use FTP

Before you read these instructions you should have already chosen and downloaded your FTP Client. The following instructions are written for Transmit, but the process is more or less the same on the other ftp clients for PC and mac.

  1. Open your ftp program: Notice how the window has two sides; the files on the left are on your computer and the ones on the right are on the server. Since we're not connected to the server yet, the server side should be blank.
  2. On the server side (right) there are some icons, click the one that says favorites
  3. On the bottom right there are two 'plus' icons, click the far right plus to add a favorite.
  4. This brings up a window asking for your FTP info, input your info (FTP, Server, & Host are used interchangeably, so the email you got from your server company could say one thing and the the program say another, but they are the same thing.)
  5. Once you put in that info click OK and you'll be brought back to the main screen with a favorite for your site on the right. Now that you have set up this favorite you won't have to do it again. Every time you open Transmit to edit your site you will simply have to double click on this icon to access the server. So go ahead and double click it and let's get the page.
  6. You should now see your site files, which may look a little confusing at first, but you're really only interested in one of the files so it's going to be really easy.
  7. On the left side (files on your computer) we need to decide where we want to put the files. If you have a spot for your work on your hard-drive, such as the Documents folder, navigate to it at this point using the your stuff icons on the far left and or the pull down above the window that has your files.
  8. Now that we're in the right spot you should make a directory called website to hold the file just so you know where it is. There should be an icon on the top of the window for making directories.
  9. We want to get the file called index.php, so once you have a spot for the file you can click and drag the file off the server side (right side) onto your computer (the left side).
