To edit HTML you will need to choose an FTP client & HTML editor, follow the links by clicking on the name of the program you want to try out below.
| Program | Platform | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transmit | mac | $29.95 (15 day free trial) | the best |
| CyberDuck | mac | free | good free ftp |
| FileZilla | pc | free | great free ftp client |
| fireFTP | pc or mac | free | If you use firefox as your browser you can get this FTP extension. |
| Program | Platform | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| TextMate | mac | €39 ≈ $60 (30 day free trial) | the best, fully featured, ideal for professionals |
| Text Wrangler | mac | free | Good free editor, based on BBEdit |
| NotePad++ | pc | free | Advanced free editor for PC |
| PS Pad | pc | free | Very good free editor |
| jEdit | pc | free | I haven’t used it but hear it’s good |
| Aptana | pc or mac | free | Looks good from the site |
| DreamWeaver | pc or mac | tons of money! | If you already bought Dreamweaver it does include a good HTML editor and FTP client, just DO NOT use their visual WYSIWYG editor on pages we make. Our pages are hand coded to make it easy for you to edit the code in a regular HTML editor. Using visual editors generates HTML code that will mess up the pages. |
Very nice and quick overview. A major player is Microsoft Expression Web 3 which comes bundled with Expression Design for a low $149.00 price tag (for Microsoft anyways). I know that many designers pigeon hole Microsoft due to the now defunct FrontPage. Our design firm has switched from the pricey and bloated Adobe Dreamweaver in favor of the lightweight (can you believe it) built from the ground up MS Expression Web 3. Give it a try. Also, there is open source Kompozer based on Mozilla Firefox’s engine. It is light as a feather.
I’m sure Microsoft can make a descent editor, but they are notorious for their bloated software (price and computing power needed to run them). So it’s -probably- not worth the extra money…
All the pros I know use Coda and TextMate…
If you’re not a pro and just want to do some light HTML editing, the free options on this page are just as good as the paid options in my opinion.
