Do you need a CMS for a video site?

Before we can create a video site we will need to decide whether you need a publishing system or not. This page will help you make this decision by pointing out the pros and cons of both methods.

WordPress as a video CMS

WordPress is a very versatile content management system that can be used for pretty much any kind of website. If you’re going to be publishing a lot of videos on a regular basis then this would be the way to go.

If you decide you don’t need a publishing system you open yourself up to the possibility of creating a flash site. The benefits of having a site made all in flash are that the transitions between videos are more fluid and customizable. An example of a site we’ve made without a publishing system is moyercine.com.

Here more comparison between the two systems, let us know which you think will work best for you.

advantages of using a CMS

  • You would have a web based CMS (content management system) to upload and update your own content. To update the content on a site we make in flash, you would either have to send us video files to put on the site (which we charge for by the hour) or if you have a tech savy person on your staff who would like to handle the updating of content we could talk them through the process which isn’t very complicated.
  • With wordpress, instead of uploading your videos through the wordpress system you could also embed them from YouTube which would allow your videos to get more exposure.
  • If you’re going to have a site with a ton of videos you might need a Search feature: since you’ll be titling and adding descriptions through WordPress we could also program a search.
  • Each video would have a unique URL so you could email urls for your videos.
  • Makes it easier to integrate advertising

advantages of not using a CMS

  • It is easier to program the functionality and customize the look of a site that does not include a publishing system.
  • If we’re not going to be integrating a CMS we would be making the entire site in Flash which adds much more interactive feel

Either system would allow us to make a great website, the question is whether you need the CMS features or not. We’ve found that the WordPress system is best if you have a large amount of content you want to offer and you will be adding new content regularly, otherwise the costs could outweigh the benefits of the system.

Hey there! Just wanted to let you know that another option I’ve just recently started using is MediaCore Video CMS, I used to use a hacked up version of WordPress, but after using MediaCore I’ve found it to be much cleaner, aesthetically and technically.
It’s also better then most of the scripts listed above because, ultimately, it’s free and open source!
There was a bit of a learning curve figuring out Python, but it was certainly worth it. MediaCore is easily implemented and a lot easier to theme then the others I’ve experimented with.
I also use it to implement and manage my podcast as well as my videos. The iTunes feed generation is one of MediaCore’s best features by far. It was definitely a very simple process utilizing MediaCore for my podcast and various projects.
I started out with MediaCore as a simple podcast site but found myself using it more and more to host, manage and pull interesting videos I found from various sources around the web (e.g.. Youtube, Vimeo etc…).
Check out the project at MediaCore Video CMS.

We’ve actually used WordPress as a video CMS on a few projects using TubePress which was very easy to setup and theme… I’ll definitely try this though, thanks for sharing. Just curious, why would I need to learn python to use it? That seems like a lot to ask of all your users :D Does the plugin require changing of it’s source code or is it all controlled through the WordPress admin?

        Hey Mimoymima!
MediaCore Video CMS is a separate CMS and not a plug in for WordPress but it easily theme able to suite your wordpress blog, but it’s very neat and clean so when I implemented it I only made minor modifications. We have a WordPress integration plugin in the works though!

We’d be able to use it once you get the WordPress integration plugin finished.

Please drop us a line when you have that figured out, the other plugins out there are good but leave a lot to be desired, we do a lot of changes to the default theming of TubePress to get it looking good.

    Great! Will do.
Just a question what exactly would you like to see, in terms of WP integration? Also, could I get your e-mail?

    • my email is brent@mimoymima.com (more contact info at the contact link above)

I’d like to see something that has a lot of options of how to add the videos from the backend end (besides using YouTube or Vimeo it’d ideally allow for self-hosted videos that the user can upload through the WordPress admin)

Just one word of advice, you might want to soften your initial sales pitch when you leave comments on blogs, I almost marked your comment as spam because it talks about how easy the product was for you to use but then I went to your site and you were the creator of the product :D .. You’d do much better just telling people up front you’re the creator, you have a really nice looking CMS and we’re definitely going to keep an eye on it.
